Isn't that inevitable in America anyway? Why else arm all of your people? Why else protect the right to arm yourself dogmatically? A genuine question from a non-American by the way.

You are right but you've selectively ignored every other piece of information in my post. What has the legal system done to prevent random people from chasing down an African-American man and shooting him out of suspicion? Taking justice into their own hands as you said.

Take a look at the number of people who return to prison each year in your country. In Australia the number only decreased because of COVID-19!

My main argument, as was the writer's, is that the legal system isn't working. Taking justice into your own hands is a starting point. It's not the endgame. Obviously it's not as simple as that. Afterall if I really wanted to reduce crime I would support enforcing a lockdown on all of us every 2 months. Maybe forever. Prison state anyone?

I think people would get real creative with their crimes here.

Again it's not that simple. I'm sorry I didn't specifiy a full-proof 100% effective solution in my post but I'm sure you're stuggling to think of one too.

At the very least I believe the family could be more involved with the outcome of a legal trial. Does this mean they have the final say? No. Especially if their opinion heavily contradicts the evidence on hand. However, lets say someone rapes and murders five minors (evidence supports guilty verdict) and shows very little remorse. I think the family should have some say in what happens to the person. Even if it means forgiving them. Certainly prison won't change the rapist. It'll just restrict their freedom.

Humans are swayed by emotion. An AI program would be more objective than a judge and jury. There are so many psychological affects to explain how judges and juries become biased, even after curated selection by lawyers. We'd be closer to "justice" if we used an AI. So why does it matter if the family is more involved in what happens to the criminal?

I wish we could go back to following a moral code that we've so clearly strayed from. It's not looking up though. Otherwise why would be need to write in legislation that should be common sense.

I would love to have a genuine discussion about this with many people. I am more than happy to combat my cognitive dissonance. I wonder if you're willing to do the same...
